Ulli Knall's first solo exhibition at the Lisi Hämmerle Gallery (September-October 2005) was titled thank you girl and the gallery is pleased to show works from this show at ARCO Madrid.
All sculptures are painted ceramics , titled: Flora, Girl With Pearl Earring, Woman With Red Hat".
In addition we will be showing several drawings and a video. Although Ulli Knall works across different mediums, a consistent interest in sculpture brings her forays into other materials back onto common ground.
All works are based on famous portraits from art history and created from mediums such as ceramics, clay, coloured paper, chalk, ink and video. Knall’ s works explore the creation of new meanings by either cross-referencing people and the space they inhabit in drawings, or taking them to a new dimension by making sculptures of famous paintings, or transferring abstract patterns from her drawings into her videos. Knall’ s interest in the figurative and its varied and complicated past during periods such as modernism - where structure was supreme to depiction and ornament - fuels her desire to reorganise hidden and obvious meanings by drawing unusual connections.
The drawings and objects mediate between two and three dimensional space, extending into a communication system where idea and material have corresponding value within a cultural code that tips over into the unknown.
Ulli Knall lives and works in London.
