Michaela Konrad startet mit einer Präsentation von handgedruckten Titelbildern und der Video-Arbeit WILL THIS BE?, ihre erste Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Lisi Hämmerle
Im Alter von 22 Jahren stößt die Künstlerin Michaela Konrad zum ersten Mal auf Aldous Huxleys Buch Brave New World Revisited. In dieser Aufsatzsammlung aus dem Jahre 1958 analysiert der Autor seinen rund 30 Jahre zuvor erschienen Roman und kommt zum Schluss, dass viele seiner damaligen Prognosen bald eintreffen könnten. Er beschreibt eine Welt, die nach der Jahrtausendwende bereits über 6 Milliarden Einwohner haben wird. Und er beschreibt den Druck, den diese stetig wachsende Bevölkerung auf die endlichen Ressourcen der Erde ausüben kann.
Huxley weist auf den rasanten technologischen Fortschritt hin und auf die daraus folgende immer höhere Konzentration von Macht und Geld in Politik, Wirtschaft und Medien. Er sagt das Verschwinden des „kleinen Mannes“ voraus, der nicht genug Mittel aufbringen wird, um mit den großen Playern mithalten zu können. Er beleuchtet die Manipulationen der Werbung und der Unterhaltungsindustrie mit ihren ständigen Ablenkungen. Und er weist auf die Gefahr hin, dass diese gesellschaftlichen und politischen Veränderungen den Menschen die Freiheit nehmen können. Demokratische Staaten drohen, sich schleichend in autoritäre Systeme zu verwandeln, die nur mehr den Anschein von Demokratien vermitteln.
Man kann sich nicht intensiv auf einen Krieg vorbereiten, es sei denn in einem totalitären Regime.

In diesem ersten Teil des Projektes CAN THIS BE TOMORROW? versetzt Michaela Konrad die Rezipienten in die goldenen 50er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts. Sie zeigt eine Reihe von fiktiven Comic Covers im Stil der amerikanischen Golden Age Comics. Inspiriert von Fantasten wie Aldous Huxley, George Orwell oder Phillip K. Dick kreiert sie eine vergangene Vision aktueller Ereignisse. Die Videoarbeit WILL THIS BE?, die gemeinsam mit den handgedruckten Titelbildern präsentiert wird, setzt sich in spielerischer Form mit damaligen Prognosen unserer Gegenwart auseinander.
Eine veränderte Perspektive auf die Gegenwart kann Distanz schaffen – eine Distanz, die wir brauchen, um im Dickicht der vielen simultan ablaufenden Ereignisse im Jetzt Orientierung zu finden – so Michaela Konrads These.

Michaela Konrad, geboren 1972 in Graz, kam 1994 über ein Stipendium für das Centro Municipal de Arte Gráfico, nach Santa Cruz/Teneriffa und fast zeitgleich absolvierte sie das Lehramt an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien. Ihr Hauptwohnsitz ist Santa Cruz geworden und seit dieser Zeit pendelt sie zwischen Santa Cruz und Wien.
In ihrer Intention, Kunst und Comic zu verbinden, startete sie ihr Comic-Art-Universum Spacelove mit Malerei, Sieb- und Offsetdrucken sowie Publikationen. Mit ihrer Ausstellung COMIC IMPACTS ART, 2008, im Kunstmuseum Temeswar in Rumänien, begann eine Zusammenarbeit mit Daniel Dorobantu, ein rumänischer Multimediakünstler. Gemeinsam entstand die Multimedia-Comic-Installation Memories of Now, ein NextComic- und Ars Electronica-Projekt.
Seit März 2013 ist die Picasso-Comic-Animation On the Beach, die in Zusammenarbeit mit Eugen Neacsu und Octavian Horvath entstand, Programmpunkt im Ars Electronica Center.

At the age of 22, the artist Michaela Konrad came across Aldous Huxley’s book Brave New World Revisited for the first time. In this collection of essays from 1958, the author analyzes his novel, published some 30 years earlier, and concludes that many of his predictions at the time may soon come true. He describes a world that will already have more than 6 billion inhabitants after the turn of the millennium. And he describes the pressure that this constantly growing population could exert on earth’s finite resources.
Huxley points out the rapid technological progress and the resulting increased concentration of power and money in politics, business, and the media. He predicts the disappearance of the “little man,” who will be unable to find the means to keep up with the big players. He examines the manipulations of the advertising and the entertainment industries and their constant distractions. And he notes the risk that these social and political changes could rob people of their freedom. Democratic states threaten to gradually transform themselves into authoritarian systems that only appear to be democracies.
One cannot prepare intensively for war, except in a totalitarian regime.

In this first part of the project CAN THIS BE TOMORROW? Michaela Konrad takes the viewer back to the golden 1950s. She shows a series of fictional comic book covers in the style of American Golden Age comic books. Inspired by fantasists like Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, or Phillip K. Dick, she creates a past vision of current events. The video work WILL THIS BE?, which is presented together with the hand-printed cover images, playfully addresses past prognoses regarding our present time.
As Michaela Konrad sees it, a shifted perspective on the present can create distance—a distance that we need to help find our way in the dense multitude of simultaneous events occurring in our present day.

Michaela Konrad, born in Graz in 1972, came to Santa Cruz/Tenerife in 1994 on a scholarship for the Centro Municipal de Arte Gráfico, completing her teaching degree at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna at nearly the same time. Santa Cruz has become her primary place of residence; since then she has been commuting between Santa Cruz and Vienna.
Aiming to combine art and comics, she started off her comic-art universe Spacelove with painting, screen and offset prints, as well as publications. With her 2008 exhibition COMIC IMPACTS ART at the Timisoara Art Museum in Romania, she began a collaboration with Romanian multimedia artist Daniel Dorobantu. Together they created the multimedia comic installation Memories of Now, a NextComic and Ars Electronica project.
Her Picasso comic animation On the Beach, created in collaboration with Eugen Neacsu and Octavian Horvath, has been part of the program of the Ars Electronica Center since March 2013.
